About ACT

Alliance to Combat Torture

A collective of lawyers and human rights activists working to end torture, extrajudicial killings, and violent practices in Pakistan’s penal system.

Who we are

Lawyers and activists, united by a shared concern

Alliance to Combat Torture (ACT) is a collective of lawyers and human rights activists based in Pakistan.

We came together out of a shared concern: the rising and largely unchallenged use of torture, extrajudicial killings, the death penalty, and harsh imprisonment as tools to control crime.

What we stand against

Violence is not justice

01

Torture

Its use in custody and investigation, often unchallenged.

02

Extrajudicial killings

Killings carried out outside the protection of the law and the courts.

03

The death penalty

We advocate for its abolition.

04

Harsh imprisonment

We push for alternatives to imprisonment as a means of justice.

What we do

Three ways we challenge impunity

01

Research

We investigate the laws and policies that enable torture, extrajudicial killings, and harsh imprisonment in Pakistan.

02

Advocacy

We push for the abolition of the death penalty and for alternatives to imprisonment as a means of justice.

03

Community

We build a movement of lawyers, activists, students, and citizens standing against torture and impunity.

We believe justice cannot be built on violence.
